How much time do I need to commit?
The amount of time required by the fraternity can vary depending on the role you choose to take. A president, vice president or treasurer will take more time than say a committee member or a member without a position in the chapter. Either way your responsibilities will require at least four hours of your time per week during your first year of membership.
What are the benefits of membership?
There are many benefits to becoming a member of Beta Theta Pi. One of the most striking benefits of membership is the ability to attend any of our award-winning leadership opportunities held every year. Another advantage is the ability to network with other Betas from across North America. Eleven CEOs of the top Fortune 500 companies are Betas and there are literally hundreds of Betas just in the Bay Area! Additionally, the chapter hosts its own social functions throughout the year, so there will be plenty of opportunities to network with other SJSU students. Many members appreciate the camaraderie and casual family atmosphere of the fraternity. For some, Beta is a second home for them and a place to hang out and relax. For others, it is a perfect place to develop social and leadership skills, which will give them a definitive edge later in life. Regardless, all members can agree that Beta has made them into better men and we hope that you will consider Beta Theta Pi as the perfect fraternity for you.
What support does the chapter receive from the General Fraternity?
The San Jose State chapter of Beta Theta Pi has a full advisory team consisting of a chapter counselor, risk management advisor, financial advisor, pledge education advisor and recruitment advisor. These advisors have completed the General Fraternity advisory team training and are in place to support the chapter as mentors and advisors. In addition to receiving support from local advisors, the chapter receives on-site assistance from a General Fraternity leadership consultant several times a year.
Fraternities have a bad name. How will I not be associated with those stereotypes?
Fraternities are idealistic in nature. Internationally, many fraternities are dispelling these stereotypes through programming and initiatives. You can be a part of changing that stereotype by creating the exemplary Fraternity on campus, while creating friendships and bonds that will last throughout your life.
I am worried that I will be looked down upon if I choose to drink.
Beta Theta Pi supports responsible behavior. All members will be held accountable to local laws and University regulations. We also encourage self-governance and believe the chapter will make decisions befitting of Beta Theta Pi.
Why should I “Go Beta?”
We believe life is about relationships. You will surround yourself with kind and intelligent people by “Going Beta.” This organization is full of opportunity. It will enrich your life tremendously if you contribute and open yourself up to the experience.
What are Beta Theta Pi’s academic standards?
One of Beta’s core values as a fraternity is the cultivation of the intellect. Beta Theta Pi believes in the academic success of our members and demonstrates that belief by sponsoring over $60,000 in annual scholarships. Furthermore, Beta is the first fraternity to have minimums standards for all chapters and undergraduate members. In 1997, the fraternity adopted a 2.5 minimum GPA for all undergraduate members. In 2006, the fraternity establishes a minimum 2.7 GPA for all chapters.
I am concerned about finances...
We understand there is a financial investment in being a member, but we do not want money to be the reason you miss this opportunity. The Beta Theta Pi Foundation offers more than $60,000 annually in scholarships ranging from $250 to $2,500 to our undergraduate members. Further, payment plans can be established to ease any burden over a period of time.
